Dr. Levine may have excelled at his earlier biographical efforts, but he fell perilously short on Thaddeus Stevens. The key, that he apparently chose to ignore, is Stevens' mixed-partner for 25 years in Lancaster PA and Washington, DC., Lydia Hamilton Smith. Penn State Press published my biography of Mrs. Smith, An Uncommon Woma: The Life of Lydia Hamilton Smith in 2023. In it, I document the committed, loving, inspiring relationship the two maintained in the mid-19th century, in the face of vicious condemnation from white supremacists in the North and South. I sent a copy of my book with an extensive explanation of what my research shows to Dr. Levine, and he refused to accept it. (I'd be happy to send you one, too, in the interest of furthering the whole, true, inspiring story of these two great Americans.) In my book, I do share information I found revealing Stevens' inner life, including how deeply he loved and respected Lydia Hamilton Smith and his understandings of religion and morality. I would be happy to chat with you about this inspiring pair, or , debate Dr. Levine over his summary dismissal of Mrs. Smith in his biography of Stevens with: she was just his housekeeper, strictly a professional relationship.
